M2L Associates is proud to celebrate the recent groundbreaking on a new $8 million youth center and park in San Juan, Texas, a small town in the Rio Grande Valley near McAllen and the Mexican border. M2L is the landscape architect and ERO Architects is the architect of record.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, San Juan Mayor Mario Garza said the park has been in the works for years and will be a place to help area youth stay active and exercising. “Kids will be able to come out here to the facility,” he said in an interview. “It will keep them active and keep them out of the street. It’s a win-win for parents and our kids.”
The 9.5-acre complex will include numerous amenities to improve the community’s quality of life, including a walking trail, two indoor basketball courts, outdoor sports for basketball and soccer, an inclusive playground, a splash pad and pool, shaded picnic areas, and plenty of parking.
M2L Principal Wen-Ping Hung will lead the landscape design team and was on hand for the groundbreaking. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with ERO and bring our parks and recreation expertise to this project,” she said. “Our designs and plans have been informed by tremendous community and stakeholder involvement from the area. It’s inspiring to bring a completely new facility and amenities to life for families and children of all ages and abilities in San Juan, especially in the north part of the city where park amenities have been lacking.”
The project will be accomplished in two phases, the first of which is anticipated to be completed by December 2023.
With 35,000 people, San Juan is in southern Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley, approximately 5 miles east of McAllen, Texas and 10 miles north of the Mexican border. For more information and to view more park renderings, click here.
